Why I Left The Contemporary Christian Music Movement $14.99 “Writing from his own personal experience as a former worship leader, Dan Lucarini questions the use of contemporary music in the worship of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and shows why he believes many churches have been deceived into using ever increasing worldly means to ‘reach their lost’. He has seen at first hand how an emphasis on music, and the ultimate move towards rock music in particular, has caused divisions in the church, and turned the emphasis in worship away from the Lord towards ourselves.” |

Imagination and Interpretation: Christian Perspectives $19.95 “Interpretation is tricky business. Music and art are among the most difficult ‘texts’ to interpret. And yet, today more than ever, the media are bombarding us with sounds and images that desperately need imaginative Christian minds to interpret. Is it possible to find traces of the transcendent in contemporary culture? Do we perhaps even find Christian modes of expression where we would least expect them? Or should Christians take a far more critical interpretive stance toward contemporary cultural art forms than they generally do? Consisting of three main sections, this collection of essays first asks how we should interpret the cosmos and the biblical story of salvation. The second part deals specifically with questions surrounding music and worship. The final section deals with the interpretation of contemporary art and mass media. This collection of essays is a helpful guide for those who are willing to engage the imagination as they face tough interpretive questions, particularly in the areas of music and the arts. Contributors to this volume: Jeremy Begbie . John L. Bell . Hans Boersma Dennis R. Danielson . Laurel Gasque . Wayne L. Roosa Quentin J. Schultze . Diane Sekuloff . James K.A. Smith Hans Boersma (Th.D., University of Utrecht) is associate professor of religious and worldview studies at Trinity Western University. He has been appointed to the J. I. Packer Chair of Theology at Regent College. Boersma is also the organizer of the annual LambLight Lecture series sponsored by the Geneva Society and the author or editor of several books, including A Hot Pepper Corn: Richard Baxter’s Doctrine of Justification in Its Seventeenth-Century Context of Controversy and Violence, Hospitality, and the Cross: Reappropriating the Atonement Tradition.” |

The Christian Faith Uninformed by the Culture $14.99 “Religious apostasy is now rife in the land. Do not be misled. No human has a corner on the word of God. Do not look to man for truth: look to God. Dr. Richard Murphy is a native New Yorker. His ministry as a Christian compels him to be present in dialogue at this time. Reading and rereading the Bible, as well as Bible study in church, church seminars, the use of reference books and commentaries, church membership, singing in the choir, summer church camp, and church committee work have qualified him to write this commentary even though it is many years later than was his expectation. He received Jesus Christ as Lord in junior high school. As a practicing physician in New York City he learned first hand about the plight of young and old who are culturally driven and thereby lacking in fellowship with Jesus Christ. Dr. Karen Murphy, growing up in the South and having a childhood dream of being a missionary, began piano lessons at the age of four. With music always being a part of her life, her understanding increased as God guided her into this field. In mid-life after her children became teenagers, she returned to graduate school earning two more degrees in piano. With her doctorate, she joined the music faculty in 2008 at Mississippi State University. Karen’s future plans include writing, from a Biblical perspective, a practical step-by-step health plan with satisfying recipes and simple exercise ideas.” |

What it means to be a Christian band or play Christian music? Of course there are artists who produce music easily which have obvious connotations are a Christian or shameless praise songs. And they can vary styles of alternative rock to heavy metal to country. And then there others who are declared Christians, but to produce music that is not as evident in the Christian theme as their counterparts elsewhere. Some even have songs that have absolutely no reference to Christian and talk about romantic love, are protest songs or songs very very angry. So where is the line on what should be considered Christian music?
Perhaps consideration paramount in the selection of individuals or groups to be included in the selection list would surely boil to one of the most important things in every song: the lyrics. No matter how heavy guitar riff may sound, no matter how sexy May get beat, no matter how to control the voice or style of May, so it is truly Christian material, he passes the test. Many people would say that metals heavy electronica or Christian is essentially impossible because these two types are known for their less than Christian habits as much as their music. But true ie, as the lyrics as a Christian, the overall message is more or less as well, no matter what the environment may be.
And what about the artists who are Christians, but admits that he does not write explicitly Christian songs? Some things may just boil down to matters of interpretation, but I think songs become much larger and become separate entities outside of those who wrote. Thus, a song about something completely non-Christians even when he is a practicing artist can not be considered Christian music because of the absence of any connection between the song religion out of personal conviction of the songwriter (who are probably not reflected in the song anyway).
This debate rages on even today, and has probably made Christian music better, more diverse and stronger than ever. If you want more information on Christian music, visit:
