He has seen at first hand how an emphasis on music, and the ultimate move towards rock music in particular, has caused divisions in the church, and turned the emphasis in worship away from the Lord towards ourselves.”

Interview with Jana Alayra

I met Jana Alayra in 1999, during one of his concerts in churches. Energy it brought was electrifying. The children went crazy over his performance, so crazy that you'd think Barney or the cast of Sesame Street were entered the building. When his performance was over, she returned to sing "adult" songs for our Ministry of Women and speak his life as a Christian. She left us in tears, but mostly it left us inspired. I hope this interview has captured the essence that is Jana and it makes you want to learn more about it …

Alyice: How long have you been a Christian singer and musician?

Jana: I'm not sure where he "officially" started. I began to lead worship in my twenties. I worked as a singer and performed live with the child artist's professional name of Mary Rice Hopkins, while continuing to lead worship and write music for adults. When I was 28, I recorded my first collection of original praise songs. I guess when it happened, I began to be thought of as a "professional"-I Just Got Paid to do what I love.

My husband, Ron, producing CDs of our children first in 1996, which opened a whole new world of concerts and recording for children and families could barely keep up. In 1997, he left his job with Mercedes Benz and entered the full-time recording and production. So I guess we've both been "professional" since then.

Alyice: Do you still sing professionally?

Jana: When I was little, my sisters and I would hang sheets in the basement and do our own little production of "The Sound of Music" or "Oliver". I think that's when we all dreamed of being singers professionals. But I never had any formal training in terms of music, so I never thought I could go beyond just entertainment here and there: weddings, coffee, etc.

I'm not a great voice, a star formation, so I do not consider myself a professional "singer." I know that the Lord gave me a pleasant voice that people can easily sing along, and above all a message of hope to share. The fact that we life in this way continues to amaze me.

Alyice: At age 10, you learned about yourself to play guitar. How are you going to teach yourself to play a musical instrument, let alone read music?

Jana: It was in Indiana, and believe me, these winters could be long and tedious. We have often searched looking for something new to do or play with. On one of our closets explores I came across a dusty guitar hidden way back in the corner beside my mother's wardrobe. I was surprised to discover, My mother, she tinkered with the guitar years ago because we never heard her play, but it was a short pass-time. So when I asked if I could play with her, my mother willingly given, and several books on ancient art of guitar and strings (by Ernie Ball).

For some reason I took the challenge and taught myself the chords, in the book fairly quickly. It must have been a God-given the desire to press, because I think you're either motivated to learn or you do not. I just kept playing and playing, scraping and scratching for hours and hours in my room until I could finally do it through a few songs. I think the whole song first, I learned: "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" by Glen Campbell.

From there I learned the songs, either by purchasing agreements with music guitar or copying what I heard on records, but so far I only know chords. I can not read written music. People find it absurd that a "professional" musician, singer, songwriter and performer can get by without being able to read music. In fact, I would have learned somewhere along the line, because it limits me terribly now. I must have my husband and members of the band read music written or to what I write sheet music, maybe someday I'll learn.

Alyice: Have you been trained to help you write your own music and songs or was it simply a gift from God talent?

Jana: As I mentioned, I never had any formal training, but between ages of 25 and 31 that I lead worship for a group of 200 university students at my church, which was an invaluable experience in terms music written. I have been immersed in this world more and more "worship" music. I knew that dozens and dozens of songs (by heart!) And playing my guitar constantly in front of people. This undoubtedly was God "training" me. "I think seeing what people have responded to this experience gave me a sense for what kind of songs fit well for me.

During my adolescence, I wrote a few songs, but this period of my life there was just a creative explosion for me. I have no children yet, so I had more time to grow musically. A good friend plays the piano and our styles complimented perfectly. We would just start playing together (I suppose the term musician is "scrambling") and songs would emerge. It seems that whenever I read the Bible, a song would pop into my head so I would grab my guitar and a few pieces of paper and begin scribble, recovery and re-writing.

Sometimes the result is a complete piece, other times just a great time with God and be a piece of lost. Writing songs, all became part of my daily life.

Without doubt, the experience I had performing with Mary Rice Hopkins must have influenced or inspired a natural talent for writing catchy songs of children. Mary is the queen of catchy! But when I worked with it, I never thought about or aspired to write my own children music. I wrote songs praising adult at the time. But at some point, several years after I stopped working with her to raise my children, I was asked to write a theme song for the summer program for children. It came quickly and easily. The children responded to this challenge with enthusiasm. Since then my brain goes in both directions while writing – sometimes in the kind of adults, sometimes to the catchy little Ditty suitable for children. Songs for children I have written have been inspired by a number of things, obviously, the Bible, and also the comments of my own children "or reflections on something they have learned, or something, I hope they have learned.

On the CD last two children, there were some songs Ron and I actually wrote together. It came with a cool rhythm and I wrote the lyrics. Then we worked through the whole song together. As difficult as working together, can potentially be, these songs were just a blast to evolve together.

Alyice: Where come the ideas for your songs come from and what process do you usually take to write?

Jana: As I have mentioned (perhaps I should read through these questions before I walk!) By far the most common source of inspiration for me is the Bible. Second hearing someone who is teaching the Bible. There have been many sermons I sat through where it might appear that I took notes abundant, but I actually scribbled lyrics to a song that had popped into my head. Sometimes a thought or an idea just pop song in my head such as Random Way-when I'm at the grocery store or waiting in line at the bank. So keeping a pen and paper handy is always important for me. I lost a lot of song ideas on scraps of crumpled towel or lower revenues, which are often found in the compartment lint from my hair.

People sing about what is in their heart. God has completely changed my life in many ways. It is my passion, my hope, my joy and the music and the message just me.

Alyice: When did you get your first big break as a singer and how did it come about?

Jana: I suppose the first experiment which has really boosted my confidence as a singer was when I was 22 years. I was asked to lead the worship service of 500 college students in San Diego, California. I was terrified at first, but it soon became so natural to me that I'm not afraid to be in front of people.

A big "break" professionally speaking, works with Mary. We sang before hundreds of spectators around the country, which is certainly strengthened my confidence. And it was Mary who gave me my first experience in the recording studio.

Alyice: How long have you been partners in the music industry, with your husband, Ron?

Jana: Ron and I were on a worship team for 4 years before we married. It is a great drummer and I always admired the sensitivity with which he plays. We worship lead, concerts, and played together since our first meeting, if its just a thread natural in our relationship. We had been married two years when it became clear that the ministry requires that all efforts Ron. So with a leap of faith, he left his job and began to produce music and to manage our full-time ministry. For a time he also produced and engineered for other artists and our own music business. Today, it has just enough time to the music business of ours. So, if you count the nearly 10 years we were married and 4, before that, we have been partners for 14 years.

Alyice: How to work with Ron improved your marriage, home life and business?

Jana: Work with your spouse may be a wild ride – the joy is immense, but disagreements can grow as well. We're still learning how to find a balance there. When all is said and done, it's a thrill to have a vision common, shared ministry and shared life. We're together so much that sometimes I almost push him out the door to go on a trip to Home Depot. But I would not trade this life God has given us for nothing.

Because I'm visible, verbal part of our ministry, people often come to Ron and say things like: "You are a wonderful support for Jana," or "It takes a little strange to be in the background behind Jana. "Obviously, this is a huge support and encouragement for me (and an honest critic), but the truth is that our Ministry is truly a team effort, and it is most difficult half of work!

I write songs and make my way saves, but Ron spends months in the studio with production excellence. It is truly the most musical of the two of us. It does not read music, knows incredible players, and take in the studio and in our group. When we live concerts, I show up two hours early, he shows up three or four o'clock in the morning. It grows heavy equipment, holds the stage and works the bugs sound for my cat!

Ron is dedicated to the vigilance of our children and me to be their full-time mom, so he works tirelessly on all aspects of administration (I'd make a hash of that stuff anyway). When our house became half of the office with two employees, ringing telephones and music products overflowing shelves, he decided scary, but wise to rent office space and move our headquarters out of the house.

I absolutely love that I can be a mother to my children and for the moment She is also a great joy to share our music and message that God calls us. There is no way both of those could occur without Ron. We are really a great team and we still have crushes on each other.

Alyice: While your talent surely deserves a major recording contract, you chose a career in music on your own terms.

Jana: Why did you choose to launch your own music business and do not go with a record label?
I'll be honest and say that nobody has overthrown our door to such a transaction. But if they had, I feel that with what Ron and I attended, we probably chose the same route. I know that record companies do an excellent job of presenting artists in a world that otherwise would not have access to their music. But contracts often require much travel, and having to relinquish a degree of your artistic decision making and creative capabilities to the record label. Although this arrangement might be okay for some artists and musicians, especially youth, individual artists who can really focus on "Getting Out There" is not as good for a busy family of five.

Our exposure was primarily by word-of-mouth and the ripple effect of exercise to some major Christian conventions. Recently, we found a couple of minor distribution relationships, working with companies that can get our music on the shelves of bookstores and in some publications we simply could not achieve by ourselves.

It's nice to have people request our music across the country and know their making a difference. That said, I think we did the right thing for our family, keeping small and under our control, we have been able to make decisions. We can determine our schedule and what we do with our music.

Alyice: What was the party the most difficult to get out of your own?

Jana: First, having suddenly become our home office. Then as we grew, the challenge of entrusting certain responsibilities beloved other. Fortunately, we have always had a wonderful office assistant and booking agent wonderful to represent us well, but it is part of me that always wants to go there and do all the planning and talk to everyone.

For most people, financial fear that just came out with "your own" can be paralyzing. So far we have not had to crawl for reservations, but we certainly had to make financial adjustments.

Alyice: What is the most rewarding aspect of being a songwriter, singer and manager of your own business?

Jana: I do not know what it's like to be on the other side, but we had people tell us how lucky we are to have our ministry is just that … our ministry. It is a thrill to have the Lord give me some songs to my kitchen table to watch Ron live in the studio a year later heard that they are children and adults inspiring each other side of the country.

Most people find incredibly rewarding, and me too. I know we are blessed. We learn to do what you love, and sing and speak for Jesus in a way that is hand in hand with our gifts. And of course, singing live before hundreds of children beaming with enthusiasm, praising God and shouting words of our songs – How fun is that!?

Alyice: What is the most rewarding aspect of having your husband as the producer of your music?
Jana: I get a shot on Ron enormous heart, when I watch him work. He is incredibly gifted and people ask me all the time where everything is. But I'll tell you that his meticulous, perfectionist way can be a challenge for the impetuous, impatient me. And we've had our share of disagreements with the window booth.

The following interaction during recording:
Me: It was well, eh?
Ron: Yes. Try again.
Me: But what's wrong with that? "
Ron: You can do better. Let's Try It Again.

I try a few more times, we disagreed a few times, and "cons try" becoming just clicks in my helmet telling me that we 're trying it again, like it or not.) But when all is over and people rave about how the songs sound, I praise my producer, my boss and my husband. I'm really proud of him.

Alyice: I understand that you can rent a studio recording their brand private, instead of putting up the millions of dollars needed for his own recording studio. How does one find a recording studio to rent and what is the process of manufacture own album One Is Really Like?

Jana: My first three CDs (all "major" music) were made in the studios of other people. They were friends whose work we respected, and they were available at the time! Of Nowadays, many people have really nice little studio with incredible equipment. I think we need some asking around, looking in magazines specialized.

We had wonderful producers whose powers amounted to the high price tag. But generally, they have several ongoing projects at one time or another on the calendar behind your neck. There's always more to do more to add, change more, and more to fix. It took us a long time and much investment in research in our studio where Ron is satisfied (and there will always be updated), but it's so nice to be able to work at our own pace and not have to pay on time!

Alyice: Many musicians began to sing in churches, but let fame in the secular world. What which prevents you from spending more?

Jana: Fame for the sake of glory, without a genuine message> No thank you. Maybe it's because I am old enough to see how fleeting and futile that is. Perhaps it is because I saw people intoxicated by braces, become their own god, trash their marriages and families, all for "being there". Or perhaps it is because of the perspective that I for eternity.

Eight years ago, my four year old daughter died suddenly in a car accident. When she flew into the sky, part of me went with her, and lives there in the sky. She is attentive to what matters here on earth. Store up our treasure in heaven, life for people, hearts, and Jesus. This girl is mine now looks in the face of our Savior, and I know what she sees is love, humility, compassion, generosity, and hope – these things drive of my life, and to defeat any illusions I might know who I am.

As long as God gives me a voice and an audience, I am delighted to share his message of hope. I do not think that singing about everything else thing would also be very rewarding for me.

Alyice: What it means traveling as artists, while raising three children infancy? How do you keep your family?

Jana: The journey that we have mostly been in the country, and usually for a weekend at a time, relay longest summer. We spend a lot of money on airline fares to bring the girls with us on most of our trips, but also dear whether it is worth. Our guests often have children themselves, so that girls have made friends across the country, and has received numerous bags Bag bit here and there, which is always very emotional for them.

They still love to jump from bed to bed in the hotel rooms and checking out every minute, over-chlorinated pool. We try to sneak in for a bit because wherever we go, we've seen a lot! We now have a higher junior who sometimes prefer to stay home with his friends, for all its social and sporting events and that's okay. Now, Ron and then I disappear and to an event without the children for a day needed, or simply because of a packaged program that would not be fun for them. In the future, we hope to travel to areas of third world more and share those moments with the girls. So far, it has all worked out perfectly.

Alyice: What do you find the most rewarding of your career?

Jana: It is difficult to identify what is the most rewarding thing because that I love you so much on what we do. I like music that makes kids stop fighting in the car and start singing to God. I love share with women of funny things to be a mom, and how we have a God whose love is deeper than any pit we can never fall and the only thing that does not change when so many things to do. I like CDs slide into the purse of a friend in need. I like to hear how our songs have "transformed" the worship hour at a particular church.

But there are these moments where I gutted as having been guest speaker several times in a row, and so I shared my heart with total strangers often. There are times when I want to be like many other mothers at school who can devote their energy to the lives of their children. I can lose sight of when Kids growl the Move AGAIN on a plane and having to miss a football game. But then comes the e-mail someone in Virginia has an autistic boy who watch our video non-stop and now signs and sang "Jesus loves me," I am overwhelmed. Then I heard about a mother who is Mourning the loss of a child, so I send a CD with a song for Lynn, she wrote back, he encouraged her to keep her eyes to heaven and I am humiliated. Then comes a concert where I look in the bright little faces of hundreds of small children as they sing and shout songs about Jesus, and I have a choke to restrain my tears.

After the concert comes a wilted rose picked in the garden of a mother with a child and drawing attached a note from mom says: "Thanks for teaching my children to praise God. Thank you for teaching ME in praise of God with them. Please do not stop what you do. "I can not count the times I have heard stories and read the letters that made me cry, thinking perhaps God has used me little, my husband and our family to spread his love, his joy, his hope. It is gratifying beyond words.
