First Family of Gospel Music $13.99 “First Family of Gospel Music” – It’s both a figurative and fairly literal title. On the literal side, The Speer Family was formed in 1921 by G.T. “Dad” Speer and his wife, Lena “Mom” Speer. On the figurative side, for much of the next 80 years, The Speer Family was firmly planted at the top of the Gospel Music world. Their travels took them from small churches to performances at the White House to being a part of the Gaither Homecoming phenomenon. The group and its members received 14 Dove Awards as well as numerous Grammy nominations and many number one songs from a discography of close to 100 albums. Gospel music is full of history and soul. It has a rich tradition of folk songs and hymns. Gospel is alive as remaining relevant, taking various aspects of the musical culture of the day and bringing those aspects into the spiritual fold. In modern gospel, jazz been introduced into traditional songs. This project has attracted the musical expression "gospel arrangements."
Gospel agreements are extended agreements, such as the 9th, 11th and 13th centuries. Maybe you're not familiar with these agreements. If you are unsure how to train these agreements, a brief lesson.
Start with a seventh chord dominant. This is a basic triad with a seventh lowered added. For example, in the key of C, the basic triad is CEG. This is a C major chord. In the C major scale, the seventh is a B, so the flatted seventh is a Bb. To get a dominant seventh, we'll add the BB to the basic triad.
This Agreement may be played in many ways. You can use the left hand to the root and leave the other three notes in the right hand. You can play all the notes on one hand. You can move around inside your heart. When you switch the notes of a chord around like this, you are using inversions.
For get the 9th, 11th, 13th and you'll have to add more notes to the rope. As the notes of the octave are 1-7, you must continue past one octave with numbering. The 9th tone is an octave above the 2nd; The 11th is an octave above the 4th and the 13th is an octave above the 6th. Here the use of hands different tones for different agreements really comes in handy. Well played gospel chord should not sound cluttered.
Now that you've studied these extended gospel chords, when are you going to use? Now that you've studied all those extended gospel chords, where are you use? To begin with, any gospel number can be spiced up with gospel jazz chords. Try them and see what works for you.
Take a standard as the Old Rugged Cross. In the key of A, the progression is, A7, D, B7, E, E7, A. To give some flavor, substitute any string of seventh dominant 9th with, 11th or 13th chords. Experiment with them to see what suits your taste. Change the tone of the strings. Take the B7 and make it a Bm7. When they have worked in a simple progression, extended gospel agreements make things a little more musical. They give the song more depth and color, creating a rich sound image.
Gospel music is always evolving, taking different aspects of modern styles and incorporating them into a whole. Practice making some agreements extended former regime and see what sounds good to you. With a little practice and experimentation, you will find yourself livening any traditional praise song with a series of agreements gospel well placed.
