church hymnal music
Crying At Church, Why?
For all you churchgoers, please can you answer this Q?
Sometimes during the hymnals and music, I cry and these very thoughts come to mind:
I cry for the children of the world who do not know God, for people who go to church and are not moved to change their sinful ways, and if everyone came to church and heard this glorious music there would be peace, rest in the world and everyone’s lives……….
Anyone else feel this way?
And I thank God that I am healthy that I could attend church, and that my parish is not closed or too far for travel.
I can rarely sit through a service without balling my fool head off!
This is what God want us to do. Not so much the tears and sadness, but to empty our hearts so He can fill it with His almighty love.
But hey- I don’t need to go to church to do this! I sit right here, every day at this computer and do the same as I do in church.
Because I feel and pour out God’s love as much as I can to any and all who will receive. I keep a box of kleenex handy right here on my desk too! It’s all good!

Somebodys Got My Hymnal $12 You have completed the choir warm-up prior to the worship service when you hear these dreaded words from a choir member, “Somebody’s got my hymnal!” John Yarrington has experienced this and more in his years of experience as a church musician. This intriguing book features chapters that will inform and entertain you, such as “I’ve Got the Blue Jean Blues,” “I Come to the Garden…Alone,” and “I Dance…They Play.” In this book, John Yarrington shows that the art of church music and directing a choir should be taken very seriously, but does so with much-needed comic relief. He tackles score presentation, conducting, interpersonal relationships in the church music, and choral technique. He challenges church musicians to strive for their spiritual and musical best. John shares many humorous anecdotes from his experiences as church musician and clinician. You will find jokes, quotes, and stories throughout the book. |

Ministry Of Music In The Black Church $13 The people of God have always been a singing people whose experiences shaped their songs. This has been particularly true of the black church whose musical heritage can be traced from African slavery to the Afro-American culture. Dr. Mapson’s concern is-what are the people of God singing in the contemporary black church and is the music relevant to their theology? In this study he questions whether theology is shaping music in the traditional sense or whether music now is shaping theology. There is an increasing trend in the church to separate music from theological and historical foundations. In many instances, music has become an end in itself. Music is fostering the goal of commercial entertainment rather than contributing to the worship of God.Mapson’s objective is to help today’s pastor take the leadership in improving the worship experience through the use of music that meets the biblical norm and serves theology as a legitimate response to God. In addition to evaluating the quality and relevancy of music to the worship service, the guidelines suggest ways for improving the relationship between pastor, music director, choir, and congregation. Specific helps are also provided for organizing a music committee, setting qualifications for choir director and musicians, and developing a music education program for the choir and for young untrained musicians. |

The Los Angeles native and her acclaimed producer and co-writer, Shep Crawford (Whitney Houston, Kelly Price & Yolanda Adams) obey all the rules of great, accessible, popular music, while at the same time stretching—if not breaking altogether—every single one of them. Onitsha succeeds mightily and majestically at tearing down walls between musical genres, radio formats and the “us-and-them” mentality that has much too often kept the Church and the world in their own separate corners of creation. |

The Funeral Party
In the midst of planning my own funeral (no, I’m not sick) I have had my church hymnal out, looking for the perfect hymns. I love to sing (it’s a pity that I don’t have a more beautiful voice) and I have enjoyed going through and singing the ones I know, looking for just the right words. Generally, you only get 3 or 4 songs per funeral. I have 14 so far, and I’ve only just begun. I’m in trouble.
This all started with a simple plan at our church, to get our parishioners to preplan as much as possible of their own funeral. This takes away the guesswork for the Priest and the grieving family! How considerate! We have now decided to make it a party in the parish hall, complete with great food and music – black clothing and veils optional! I am making a large poster of the top 10 funeral songs, and our pianist will play the songs, just in case one can’t quite remember how this song, or that song, goes! A big ole sing-along sounds like fun to me. We will have forms to fill out – just simple ones that can be filled in with your choice of readings, hymns, whether or not you want communion, cremation urn or casket… My father is in charge of the cemetery at out church, and he will make his plea to all that now is the time to buy your plot! I have a cremation urn business, called Christian Urns and I will make my pitch as well. I have one specifically for Episcopalians cleverly called, Episcopal Cremation Urn, that I hope will be a big seller! Sandra, our Priest, will give her pitch about Planned Giving.
There are many decisions to make, and during the shock, illness, or grieving period is not the time to be making them. So – do your family and friends a favor. Make your wishes known about what you would like at your funeral or memorial service. Write it down and give it to your family and your church. You will be doing everyone a tremendous favor, and your funeral will be exactly as you want. What a pity that you’ll miss it!
