4: a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator
5 a: great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b: the object of such devotion c: a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion
definition from Merriam-Webster
the sociology definition of a cult is a new religious movement that is characterised by new ideas and beliefs. cults are small in numbers and popularity and are often extreme or radical in their beliefs. as a cult gains popularity they turn into an established religion. for example christianity started out as a cult but has since gained enough popularity to be considered an established religion. the same goes for mormonism which started out as a cult but is now an established religion. cult doesn’t mean that the religion is bad or anything, unfortunately because most cults are radical and extreme they give all others a bad name. the definition you posted is very vague and yes could go toward most religions. i just wanted to post a more in depth definition that most people don’t ever consider.

Biblical Worship : Is It What You Think $14 “Biblical Worship: Is It What You Think? is a Bible study that invites readers to take a totally different approach to worship. With eleven chapters and four appendices Biblical Worship is organized as a great self-study book for beginners or advanced Bible scholars. The thought provoking study guide questions for each chapter make this the perfect, flexible choice for a small group or Bible class text. Rather than focusing on what Christians can or cannot do during the worship hour, however, this work addresses the biblical definition of worship along with its complementary term together. Although Greek words are discussed, there is no need to be a biblical scholar to take full advantage of this practical study. From these word studies, implications and possible implementations of biblical worship are then discussed. An eye-opening qualitative observation of a typical worship hour beautifully illustrates the reason for coming together. Included in the text is a discussion of disadvantages of church buildings, along with ways to overcome those disadvantages. The study is aimed at motivating change both in the church as an organization, and in individual Christian lives.” |

His Story, Our Response: What the Bible Says about Worship $22.99 “What does the Bible say about that? Have you ever been asked this question or wondered for yourself? “Responding to God” has long been a basic definition of Christian worship. God’s miraculous story elicits infinite reasons to respond and numerous ways in which to do so. It is the only story worthy of such an all-encompassing response. The responses described in these pages are biblical; they offer a glimpse into worship that pleases God, enabling us to discover appropriate and meaningful responses to the God who never changes. By virtue of His love, mercy, and power, our responses join the biblical narrative, becoming part of His story which will culminate when we see Him face to face.” |
